During Tết Holiday, Vietnamese people dive into a mix of fun and meaningful traditions to welcome a fresh, lucky new year. Here are some of the top things we do to kick off the celebrations!

Before the new year begins, we set up family altars to honor our ancestors and show gratitude for their guidance. It’s also the perfect time to ask for their blessings – because really, who wouldn’t want a little extra luck to kick off the year? 🌟🙏

We also take the time to carefully arrange mâm ngũ quả (the five-fruit tray), a meaningful tradition that symbolizes abundance, prosperity, and respect for our ancestors. Each fruit represents something unique – from health and wealth to happiness and longevity 🍉🍍

As New Year, or Tết, approaches, we get ready to shop 'til we drop! Whether it’s mouthwatering food or eye-catching decorations, it’s all about stocking up for a fantastic celebration. 🎊🛒

Bánh chưng (Vietnamese square sticky rice cake) is a must-have dish during Tết in Vietnam. For us, bánh chưng is not just a treat but a symbol of the Earth and a way to honor our ancestors while celebrating family bonds. 🌏

In the early days of Tết, we follow a fun tradition called "Xông đất," also known as the first visitor of the year. We believe that the first person to step into our home after midnight will bring good fortune. So, we really have to choose wisely! 😎

Lì xì, or “lucky money,” are also a Tết highlight! Elders give them to kids, and even us younger folks join in, gifting a little something to our parents and grandparents. It’s like a cheerful, feel-good money exchange with a sprinkle of good fortune. 💵

Tết isn’t Tết without hopping from one house to another, trading stories, snacks, and wishes for a prosperous year.

It’s also our tradition to head to the temple or a local artist to get a piece of calligraphy with a lucky phrase, bringing inspiration, wisdom, and tons of good vibes for the year ahead. 🥰
